A biopic that recounts, through the story-evocation of six little girls, the twenty years under the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma since the late 80s, Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, and today driving a free Burma. An art film presented by an original and contemporary visual imagery that knows how to reach the vast public. The story comes to life in a show of theatrical costumes: there a child is an adventure, and from there leads us in a time full of political news, woven with bright music and colors. At a San Suu Kyi interpreted with intensity by Ermanna Montanari, the puppet portraits of the general-dictators, of the wicked Nat-spirits, of the journalists and of the offenders, of the comical rebels persecuted for their satire against the regime alternate.
Director's note: "Making a film debut after a life on stage is exciting, after more than thirty years of theater in which the project of a film has been so often caressed and touched, through subjects left in the drawer, collaborations in screenplays, treatments published. I have in my eyes the whole history of cinema, the one that I have been nourished since I was twenty, when together with Ermanna we were passionate about Dziga Vertov and Kaurismaki and Derek Jarman, passing through Fellini and Pasolini: an art cinema and poetry which for decades has nourished our theater. My dramas have always looked at the cinema in telling the present. This vision could not fail to meet Aung San Suu Kyi and her "spiritual revolution", today more than ever necessary. Today a superficial media campaign treats the Burmese leader as an easy scapegoat, without seeing all the efforts that an entire people, in some respects still hostage to the generals, are doing to achieve true democracy. "
Marco Martinelli, director and playwright and Ermanna Montanari, actress, author and set designer, both authors of the subject of this film, founded the Teatro delle Albe (1983) - one of the most important organizations on the national level in strong dialogue with the international scene and production center - and they share the artistic direction. His texts are published and put on stage in Italy, France (selected by European projects on contemporary dramaturgy Face à Face and Fabulamundi), Belgium, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Chile, Brazil and United States. Ermanna Montanari has received prestigious awards including: three Ubu Awards and the "Golden Laurel" of the International Mess Festival of Sarajevo as "best actress"; the Duse Award; the prize of the National Theater Critics Association. Ermanna Montanari in the Teatro delle Albe).
